Living laboratories connect academics and campus operations by using sustainability-focused infrastructure projects as real-world learning and research experiences. Since 2020, academic and operational partners have collaborated on CALL projects to support the university’s carbon neutrality goals.
The CALL Vision
The Virginia Tech Climate Action Living Laboratory (CALL) will integrate students and faculty with staff to achieve the goals of the 2020 Virginia Tech Climate Action Commitment through a collaborative framework. Through transformative research, teaching and learning, and service, the CALL will build a sustainable and equitable future for our campus and the surrounding community.
Get involved with the CALL!
The Honors College has partnered with the Office of Sustainability since 2023 through its Honors Service Learning course to build the CALL framework and complete CALL projects. This page focuses on that partnership, but projects occur university-wide and the entire Virginia Tech community is welcome to partner in support of the CALL. CALL Spotlight gallery
CALL Spotlights provide summaries of projects related to the CALL. Honors College students worked with the Office of Sustainability to develop a template for these spotlights, allowing partners completing CALL projects across the university to share their work with the campus community in this gallery.
The Climate Action Living Laboratory Spotlights Gallery aims to engage with potential CALL partners, offer the Office of Sustainability a record of completed projects, and showcase important progress toward the VT Climate Action Commitment. Do you have a project that you would like to spotlight? Ensure that your project satisfies the following criteria, integrate it into the provided template, and then email sustainability@vt.edu to have it added to the gallery. CALL projects must:
- Have both academic and non-academic partners and components
- Focus on addressing/advancing one or more goals in the VT Climate Action Commitment
- Occur between 2020 and the present day
These spotlights are completed by project partners, including students, and represent work from a variety of disciplines and academic and operational units.
