Anne Patrick, PhD
Dr. Anne Patrick is a Collegiate Assistant Professor in the Honors College. Anne co-teaches the Honors College Research Methods courses with a focus on transdisciplinary research. She also teaches Principles for Collaborative Discovery, introducing students to the critical and collaborative culture of the Virginia Tech Honors College. She has experience teaching a range of courses within the discipline of Sociology as well as transdisciplinary courses related to the justice system and inequality. Anne’s previous academic appointment includes Assistant Professor of Sociology at Blackburn College.
Dr. Patrick earned her Ph.D. in Sociology with a concentration in Women’s and Gender Studies from Virginia Tech, her M.A. in Sociology from Morehead State University, as well as a B.A. in Sociology and Strategic Communication from MSU. While completing her graduate degrees, her research centered how inequality is upheld through mundane, day-to-day interactions. Her dissertation research examined how seemingly meaningless interactions uphold larger social inequality related to gender, race, and class. By exploring these concepts in digital spaces, her research investigates how online discourses impact face-to-face interactions. In her role as Collegiate Assistant Professor, Anne is taking on the scholarship of teaching and learning. Her research interests revolve around how to create inclusive spaces in higher education. Anne’s current projects include best teaching practices for undergraduate research, student perception of professors based on identity, and the impact of student perception on classroom environments and productive learning spaces. Along with the scholarship of teaching and learning, Dr. Patrick continues her research on digital space and inequality.
